School workers told to pay back taxes

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - More than 300 Norfolk school division employees face garnishment of their wages if they don't pay taxes owed to the city.
The 317 employees owe a total $81,700 in back taxes. The Virginian-Pilot says that's enough money to pay the salaries of two teachers at the bottom pay grade or about eight cafeteria workers.
Deputy Treasurer Anthony Burford says the employees have until Jan. 15 to contact the city to work out arrangements to pay the back taxes.
Burford says Norfolk public schools aren't being singled out.
The city treasurer's office took similar action earlier this year toward 594 municipal employees who owed more than $350,000.
