ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A New Mexico sheriff is without a job after the state Department of Public Safety says a he can not do police work because he is not properly certified.

The DPS training and recruitment division says McKinley County Sheriff Felix Begay is barred from police activities, because he failed to undergo required training after he was elected back in 2010.

Begay has protested, pointing to the fact he has worked for the sheriff's office on and off since 1988, serving as sheriff in the early 90's and from 2003 to 2006.

Begay says he will comply with the order even though he disagrees.
