Search for APD chief to start soon

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Mayor R.J. Berry praised outgoing Police Chief Ray Schultz for his more than 30 years of service , eight as chief, in Albuquerque on Monday.

"He is regionally and nationally recognized as one of the top law enforcement professionals in the country, and I'll be frank, I'm sad to see him go," Berry said during a press conference.

To fill Schultz's shoes, the city of Albuquerque will be conducting a nationwide search, starting in the next few months with the help of an unnamed firm. The price tag for the search, which will consider candidates from inside and outside APD, has not yet been determined.

Schultz is retiring amid a Department of Justice investigation, following years of intense scrutiny of APD for alleged officer misconduct and officer-involved shootings. Berry says he doesn't think this will be an issue in nailing down a great candidate.

"I would think that someone would be able to look at this as a tremendous opportunity to build upon the foundations that Chief Schultz has put into place," Berry said.

Berry says an interim chief, who has not yet been named, will lead APD until after the mayoral election in October.
