Rio Arribba Co. still short of officers

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The sheriff of a crime-plagued county is readjusting the working hours of his deputies to get better coverage.

Last September Rio Arriba Sheriff Tommy Rodella rearranged shifts to fix a daytime shortage of patrol officers.

But that left no one available to answer calls after eight at night.

Now he has extended night time patrol coverage to midnight.

The department has only 25 deputies who work one of the largest counties in the state.

Rodella's asking for money to hire three more.
