ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An motorcycle officer on patrol at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is in the hospital after being struck by an SUV Saturday morning.

Albuquerque Police Department Sgt. Todd Mock was hit about 7:30 a.m. at Wilshire Avenue NE and Pan American Freeway South, the Interstate 25 frontage road.

He is reported to be in stable condition after being airlifted from the scene by a PHI medivac helicopter.  The chopper was called in due to the heavy fiesta traffic around the scene, Sgt. Donovan Olvera said in a statement released late in the morning.

Earlier reports indicated Mock was complaining of hip and leg pain and may have suffered a broken ankle or foot.

The name of the driver of the SUV and details of the crash have not yet been released.  Olvera said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The intersection was shut down but has since reopened.

At the time of the crash the morning mass ascension had been canceled due to high winds aloft even though surface winds were relatively mild.

Troublesome winds remain in the forecast .
