ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Every MDC inmate costs Bernalillo County $60 a day, a price that is coming out of tax payer’s pockets and with overcrowding it is only costing more.
Two motions, calling for action on who will oversee MDC has turned talks into an all out brawl.
Commissioner Maggie Hart-Stebbins filed a motion on Monday that would secure the current administration with the county manager and deputy county manager still in charge.
On Friday, another motion was filed to turn the reigns over to the sheriff.
“We’ve been running the jail for 20 years the same way wondering why we've gotten the same results. The second side is I want to shorten the chain bureaucracy,” Commissioner Wayne Johnson said.
Hart-Stebbins disagrees saying the current administration has a plan to address the overcrowding.
Both sides believe their choices could reduce the jail population by coming up with alternatives for low-risk inmates.
The commission could choose on Tuesday.
