SANTA FE (KRQE) - A Santa Fe District Court judge who retired Friday bought a lottery ticket the next day and won $1 million.
Former Judge Michael Vigil regularly buys lottery tickets and purchased the winning ticket and four others Saturday on his way back to Santa Fe from Albuquerque, he said Wednesday.
Later that day he compared the numbers and confirmed he won the $1 million.
“I did it backwards,” Vigil told News 13. “I retired, then I won the lottery.”
In fact, the former judge almost won $40 million, but missed the Powerball number by just one number, he said.
Vigil said he wants to travel and pay off all his debts with the money. In addition, he said he probably won’t have to take another job later and that his wife, Carla Lopez, may retire early from the city of Santa Fe.
