Lexington Ave. house to be demolished

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - "We'll probably try to get this thing torn down as soon as possible, probably within the next 24 to 48 hours," Joe Martinez with the Safe City Strike Force said after the last fire at a Lexington Ave. House.
That was more than a week ago, and nothing has happened yet. Martinez says, a deadline set for the owner of the property passed Tuesday at 5:00 p.m., and the house will come down on Wednesday.
The Super Bowl Sunday fire happened less than a month after fire devoured the same home . The body of an elderly woman was found inside.
The smell of smoke still drifts off of the property, but neighbor Bob Trudo says, the scent is the least of his worries.
"I've heard creaking from the house, so something is about to give way," Trudo said. "We're concerned that a good gust of New Mexico wind, which is not beyond reason, could literally take it down."
Trudo says he's afraid the house will come down without the city's help, and damage surrounding homes.
Martinez says they've hit a couple of bumps along the road to demolish the Lexington Ave house. It took days to get the gas shut off. Then the property owner, who will be billed for the demolition, didn't like the estimated price for leveling the structure.
"The property owner reviewed the bids and he wanted to have an opportunity to have a contractor of his choice come out and bid the job, the demolition job," Martinez said.
The city gave the owner until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday to line up his own contractor to tear town the house. Martinez says, that deadline was not met.
"We've had a few hiccups in the whole deal, but our goal is public safety and we're going to get it down," said Martinez.
