Crash report released in Tibbetts crash

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - New Mexico State Police have completed its report into the crash that killed Sandoval County Fire Chief Jon Tibbetts and they have determined mechanical problems were a factor.

The crash happened in late July on I-25 near Bernalillo.

State police say for unknown reasons 22-year-old Armando Saenz veered out of his lane and overcorrected twice before hitting and bouncing off a concrete barrier, which caused him to hit Tibbetts.

Tibbetts' SUV rolled and landed on its roof, killing him.

State police say a mechanic examined Saenz's vehicle and found a problem that would cause the wheels to move excessively and cause stiff steering.

Police also say when they searched his SUV, they found marijuana.

Saenz's blood was drawn to determine if he was high at the time of the crash, but those results are not in yet.

District attorney Lemuel Martinez said his office is still going over the report to decide if Saenz will face any charges.
