ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - It was the first time New Mexico has heard from the Albuquerque police chief since the mayor's office announced his retirement last Friday.
Police Chief Ray Schultz’s pending departure comes in the midst of a federal probe by the department of justice sparked by dozens of police-involved shootings and allegations of officer misconduct.
The chief said Monday his departure has nothing to with the scandal surrounding APD.
He says after more than 30 years with the Albuquerque Police Department, eight of those as chief, he is retiring this year to focus on his family.
Schultz was named chief in 2005 amid scandal.
For the past two and a half years, Schultz and the department have been under intense scrutiny.
The department has been plagued by a number of high profile cases alleging excessive force and officer-involved shootings.
When the DOJ announced its investigation, Schultz told KRQE News 13 he had no plans to retire and that he would see the federal investigation through.
Now he says he will stay on through the fact-finding portion of the DOJ's investigation.
Schultz says he hopes he will be remembered for the positives during his time as chief.
“I came on as chief right in the middle of the evidence room scandal,” Chief Schultz said. “Our evidence room now one of the top evidence rooms in the country…people come from all over to see how we're doing things, so we've done some great things.”
Chief Schultz still has not set a date for when he will retire, but says it will likely be this summer around July.
