ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A wildlife center in Santa Fe is facing a funding crisis.

Officials say the Santa Fe Raptor Center is projected to be out of funds by the end of January.

The nonprofit organization works to rehabilitate birds of prey.

The center is facing the challenge of feeding more birds than usual this year.

It now has about 21 birds, more than double its usual capacity.

Some birds stay for as little as two weeks, while others are in residence for more than a year.

More than $42 million that's how much the feds say it will cost over the next decade to get the Mexican spotted owl off the endangered species list.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife says money would cover a recovery plan that includes everything from the bird's habitat requirements to uncertainties such catastrophic wildfires.

The owl was first listed as threatened in 1993.
