ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Federal officials are preparing to round up thousands of wild horses and burros across the west including New Mexico.
The round-up begins Monday also in Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming, to help control the soaring number of wild horses and burros.
The plan is to corral a total of 3,500 animals.
In New Mexico, more than 450 horses will be caught and about 150 later released after fertility injections.
Those that aren't released will be sent to permanent corrals according to the BLM.
With no predators, the number of wild horses and burros can double every four years.
