Santa Fe preps for continuing drought

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Water resource managers with the city of Santa Fe say they are preparing for a third straight year of drought.

They've been monitoring snowpack levels, weather conditions and reservoir levels. Many of the state's reservoirs have dipped to record lows over the past two years as a range of dry conditions continue to cover nearly all of New Mexico.

The director of the city's water utility division, Brian Snyder, says Santa Fe has been implementing ordinances and operations plans for dealing with drought for the past two years.

While the city has been pushing awareness and conservation, Santa Fe has also invested in a mix of surface and groundwater sources.

Officials say if delivery of water from the San Juan-Chama project is curtailed this year, the city has several years' worth of project water stored upstream.
