ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - New Mexico and the USDA are teaming up to develop a plan to get rid of feral hogs.

The wild pigs have made themselves at home across more than three-quarters of the U.S., including New Mexico.

They destroy crops and gardens and have turned watering holes into pigsties, causing about $1.5 billion in damages every year.

Federal and state land managers plan to use $1 million in federal funding on a yearlong pilot project aimed at getting rid of the pigs and using what they learn here to keep them from gaining a foothold somewhere else.
