GRANTS, N.M. (KRQE) - Winter weather is back and by Tuesday afternoon was causing snow-related problems on New Mexico roads.

It's the calm before the storm in Grants, and down the road toward Gallup snow is falling.

Traffic is moving slow and for very good reason.

Multiple traffic crashes were being reported in Gallup and west to the Arizona border.

That prompted the New Mexico Department of Transportation to close the westbound lanes of I-40 from Gallup to Arizona for part of the afternoon.

NMDOT said it has trucks out working to keep roads clear with plowing and sanding.

At about 5:30 p.m. a crash was reported to be blocking the eastbound passing lane several miles east of Throreau.

Around 7:30 p.m. a KRQE News 13 crew reported a clog of slow-moving traffic east of Grants on I-40.  State Police said I-40 was open although an unknown number of crashes and slide-offs had occurred.
