ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has reclassified as endangered two fish found in New Mexico and Arizona.
The agency also designated another 200 miles of critical habitat for the spikedace and loach minnow on Wednesday in response to a lawsuit filed by environmentalists.
In all, more than 700 river miles are now considered critical for the fishes' survival.
The Center for Biological Diversity had challenged a 2005 decision by the agency to designate 522 river miles, saying that wasn't enough to protect the fish.
Biologists estimate the fish have been eliminated from more than 80 percent of their historic ranges in the two states.
The Fish and Wildlife Service says prolonged drought, anticipated effects of climate change and the increase of predatory, nonnative fish have increased the threat of extinction for both species.
