BERNALILLO, N.M. (KRQE) - They say everything's bigger in Texas, but one New Mexican says not so fast when it comes to his tree.

Richard Córdova of Albuquerque says he's now the proud owner of the biggest Rio Grande cottonwood tree in the nation, which takes the title away from Texas.

Córdova says his tree measures 34 feet around the base and is 85 feet tall.

The record is now confirmed by American Forests in its " National Registry of Big Trees ."

"I knew this was the biggest, but it did make me feel more positive about the whole thing in general," Córdova said.

Córdova says the family always has parties in their backyard, and everyone always notices the tree.
