RV crashes into median killing workers

GALLUP, N.M. (KRQE) - A tourist in an RV swerved off Interstate 40 in a construction zone Wednesday killing two employees of an Albuquerque fence company and injuring a third.

The men from Valley Fence Company were working on a New Mexico Department of Transportation project in the I-40 median in Gallup when the crash happened about 9:30 a.m.

According to police, Lee McCray, 67, of Owensville, Ind., suffered some sort of medical episode while headed west on I-40 near the Muñoz Drive interchange.

His RV then left the roadway and slammed into Hemelindo Antuñez, 55, and Johan Marioni-Torres, 20 killing both men. A third employee, Pedro Moreno, 36, was treated for his injuries and released.

All three men are from Albuquerque. Autunez was a 15-year employee of Valley Fence.

"The company is just stunned," operations manager Ernest Armijo said. "Valley Fence has been in business for 50 years, and we've never had a fatality at our jobs. It's pretty rough."

McCray was taken to a Gallup hospital to be checked out. Police are not sure what type of medical issue may be involved.

It will be up to the district attorney to determine if McCray should face any charges.

New Mexico State Police, who are continuing to investigate the crash, said alcohol did not appear to be involved.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also is investigating.
