ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A 19-year-old hiker is recovering Sunday morning after he was rescued in the Sandia Foothills Saturday.
A black-hawk helicopter had to be called in Saturday to rescue Daniel Ramirez in the foothills just east of Tramway and Montgomery.
He was then flown to UNM Hospital for treatment.
The rescue operation began Saturday afternoon, when Ramirez called 911 saying he was hurt and needed help.
The rescue effort was complicated.
Not only was the terrain rough but the 19-year-old is also 6’1” and weighed more than 300 pounds.
Police say he had a history of medical problems.
He did not have any water and was not dressed properly.
No word on the hiker's current condition.
