ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The University of New Mexico is putting down new green in hopes of saving a lot of green.
The finance committee of the UNM Board of Regents has OK'ed a plan to get rid of the grass field at UNM Stadium and put in new synthetic turf.
A new field would cost $1 million, but Vice President of Athletics Paul Krebs thinks it will pay for itself in the end.
"We believe to get additional usage out of the facility, be it high school games, state playoffs, other events, other activities, as well as the savings on maintenance, on water, the synthetic surface is the best option," Krebs told KRQE news 13.
But before the project can begin, the full board of regents still has to sign off on the idea.
