UNM Regents discuss lottery scholarship

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The University of New Mexico regents are trying to decide Monday what changes need to be made to the lottery scholarship to make sure the fund doesn't run out of money.

The regents recently launched a public survey to get ideas. Among them, reducing the amount of tuition the scholarship covers, increasing the required G.P.A, making the scholarship income based or increasing required credit hours.

The regents want to then pitch their plan to lawmakers and hope for new legislation come January.

It appears the most popular idea right now is raising the g.p.a.

“responses show that the majority of students think we need to tie academic graduation indicators to lottery recipients so we should be giving scholarships to those that are going to graduate on time and be able to leave school without too much debt,” student regent, Jake Wellman, said.

Also Monday, the regents approved an agreement with Fairmount properties to get the ball rolling on Lobo Village.

The idea is to make the area near the pit a little city with restaurants and shops.
