TAOS, N.M. (KRQE) - After more than a decade of providing free student meals, the Taos Municipal Schools will soon start charging students at some schools.

The Taos News reports students at Taos High School, Chrysalis Alternative School and Taos Cyber Magnet school will now have to pay $1.25 for full-priced breakfasts and 30 cents for reduced breakfasts.

Full-priced lunches will now cost $2.50, and reduced lunches will cost 40 cents.

The new pricing goes into effect Nov. 26.

The district said the change relates to federal rules that require a periodic update for income eligibility for the meal program. The district reported a significant number of families no longer qualified or were eligible but turned in incomplete applications or failed to apply at all.
