ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The Farmington girl with the purple violin is putting down the instrument and warming up her vocal chords.

Camille Cruz, an 11-year-old sixth grader at Tibbetts Middle School, was told by her orchestra teacher she could not play the purple violin given to her by her grandmother.

The teacher called it a distraction and said it did not have the same tone as a traditional-colored violin.

Cruz's mother met with the teacher, principal and school district about the situation, but in the end the district agreed with the teacher.

So Cruz decided to switch from orchestra to choir.
