FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - New Mexico's top education official has delayed a decision on splitting a school district made up largely of Navajos.
Education Secretary-designate Hanna Skandera had been expected to make her decision Tuesday. But she says she was awaiting a certified transcript of a hearing held earlier this month on the petition to divide the Central Consolidated School District.
The new deadline is June 12.
Tensions have long flared among residents over what is taught in the 3,000 square-mile district in northwestern New Mexico.
Some Kirtland residents want the district split at the Navajo reservation. A second option would include parts of the reservation.
Supporters say it would lead to more rigorous curriculum for the new district.
Opponents say it would hurt efforts to teach Navajo culture and language in the schools.
