ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - La Cueva High School students signed pledges Thursday not to text while driving.
The student group Teens in Prevention teamed up with KRQE News 13 and 2 KASA Fox to hand out thumb bands during lunch.
The bands are meant to remind people to put down their phones when they're driving.
It's part of the Wait to Text campaign sponsored by the stations and is known in texting shorthand as w82txt.
Teens in Prevention's goal is to promote healthy living on the La Cueva campus.
"I've heard a lot of stories of students texting while driving and almost getting in an accident, and they just go right back to texting and driving," Celeste Irwin of Teens in Prevention said. "So I think it's a big problem and very dangerous."
Irwin says they held the wait to text campaign today to remind students to be safe when going the winter dance Saturday.
