LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A statewide nursing association says Dona Ana Community College's nursing school needs to make changes or the school could end up contributing to New Mexico's nursing shortage.
The Las Cruces Sun-News reports ( http://bit.ly/MZsxRO ) that the New Mexico Nurses Association recent sent a letter to school officials expressing concerns that the college was on notice about high faculty turnover rates. In addition, the group is concerned that a national accrediting organization warned DACC that teaching staff needed master's degrees in nursing.
Students and nurses have been publicly critical of DACC President Margie Huerta and her oversight of the nursing program.
Huerta says hiring has been difficult because of low salaries. She also pointed to improvements in testing scores as a sign of progress in recent years.
