Child-porn raid nets husband and wife

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - He is the director of a big youth football league in Albuquerque, and she teaches kindergartners here.  But deputies say the two shared a disturbing secret behind closed doors.

They were arrested Friday for child porn–stacks and stacks of it, according to investigators.

Detectives say a four-month long investigation led to the arrests, when the husband and wife admitted to watching child porn together.

Bernalillo County Sheriff's detectives arrested 42-year-old Fred Gonzales and his 36-year-old wife, Carey, Friday for downloading child porn and making hundreds of DVD copies of the videos to watch together in their bedroom.

A criminal complaint says the hardcore porn videos include children between the ages of 3 and 13.

“We are not sure of any of the victims in these images. That will be part of the continued investigation,” says BCSO Deputy Aaron Williamson.

Fred was elected as this year's president of the New Mexico Young America Football League (YAFL).

His bio was removed from the YAFL website after his arrest, but he described himself as a local business owner married for 13 years to his "wonderful wife."

Albuquerque Public Schools confirms Carey has been an educational assistant at Montezuma Elementary School for the past seven years teaching kindergarteners.

The news came as a shock to the couple's neighbors near Juan Tabo and Lomas.

"The family seemed normal and stable and... I don't know what you can really say about something like that when it comes out because when you've never seen anything to indicate anything like that,” said neighbor Michael Parks.

He says police cars next door woke him up early Friday morning.

“It was 5:30 or 6 a.m. with all the red lights and things going on there. There were probably 10 or 12 cars, undercover type cars,” Parks says.

Detectives say they got a tip about the child porn allegations in September and have been working the case since then.

They served a search warrant Friday, taking several computers and media storage devices to a forensics lab.

“During the investigation, it's still very early in, but they did both admit to viewing the images that were recovered,” Williamson says.

The Gonzaleses have two children. They are now in state custody.

Carey is on paid suspension.  Montezuma Elementary will send a letter home to parents Monday.

YAFL said in a statement that it's shocked by the recent events but otherwise did not want to comment on the case or on Fred Gonzales.

Investigators are asking anyone with information that might relate to the case to contact them at (505) 314-0135.
