Waitress shot dead in Carlsbad diner

A waitress in Carlsbad was shot and killed early Thursday morning in what may be a murder and attempted suicide.

Rachel Rodriguez, 34, was working at the Denny's restaurant in the 880 block of West Pierce Street when a man walked up to her at 3 a.m. and shot her multiple times.

The man then turned the gun on himself.

Carlsbad police say Rodriguez died at the scene while the man is still alive.

His name and condition have not been released.

Investigators say they are trying to determine a motive for the shooting and aren't confirming the gunman knew the victim.
