ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Racing officials have come down hard on two New Mexico’s top trainers for illegally doping horses.

This past summer KRQE News 13 Investigative reporter Larry Barker exposed a number of horsemen who were giving their animals performance enhancing drugs.

Trainer John Bassett has been disciplined for giving a horse Demorphine, a powerful narcotic, he’s been suspended for ten years, fined $10,000 and must forfeit his winnings.

Officials say trainer Carl Draper gave a horse a substance called Ractopamine. He was suspended for ten months and must pay a $6,000 fine.

Discipline is expected this weekend against other trainers named in Larry Barker’s report.
