Teen jailed in drunken, road death

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A teenager is in jail accused of driving drunk and killing a man outside an Albuquerque Subway.

The suspect is just 16-years-old.

The question remains, where did he get the booze?

At this point APD says it does not have any information about where Tyler Jiron got the booze.

Jiron is facing a charge of vehicular homicide after allegedly driving drunk Monday night and crashing into a vehicle belonging to Rayano Smith parked in the parking lot of the Subway on Menaul near Princeton.

When Smith confronted Jiron and tried to stop him, police say Jiron took off, throwing Smith from the truck,

Smith died later that night.

Police say Jiron then got into another crash at I-25 and Lead.

He blew a .16 when he was tested.

They say right now they do not know where Jiron was drinking that night prior to the crashes or how at 16-years-old he was able to get his hands on liquor.

In past DWI crashes, clerks at convenience stores who have given liquor to minors or to people who are clearly intoxicated have been charged and the store could lose their liquor license if they have a history of it.

If it was an individual or family member they too could face charges.

Jiron was with several friends at the time of the crash. At this point they are not facing charges.

Smith was a well known Native American artist.
