SANTA FE (AP) - A Santa Fe teenager who shot a rival 14 times at a local mall will spend the next three years in a high security juvenile detention facility.
The teen was 16 when he took a gun from his mother's boyfriend and used it to kill 18-year-old Chris Aguayo in July 2010. He pleaded no contest to a second-degree murder charge.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports ( http://bit.ly/QJdgRC ) District Judge Mary Marlowe said at his juvenile court sentencing that she wasn't happy about sentencing the now 18-year-old to juvenile detention.
Recordings of the Aug. 6 hearing obtained by the newspaper Thursday show Marlowe said she wanted to send him to state prison because of the senseless nature of the killing. The state argued the teen should be treated as an adult.
