RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) - A SWAT call out was initiated Wednesday morning after police believed two auto-burglary suspects were barricaded inside a Rio Rancho home – the situation ended with five people in custody.
Police were sent to the area of Parr and Nicklause Roads around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday after receiving reports of two men breaking into a car.
When officer arrived the men took off and ran into a nearby home. The responding officers believed the suspects were armed so SWAT teams from both Rio Rancho police and State police were called in.
After a couple hours, some flash bangs and negotiations the suspects and three others came out of the home with their hands up.
Police say the suspects did not have guns with them, but they had to wait several hours for search warrant which meant neighbors and students at a nearby school had to stay inside. Investigators are currently executing that warrant.
At this point officials are not calling all five people suspects – they do say they all know each other but are investigating what role each played in the auto burglaries if any.
