Program aims to save kids from hot cars

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Albuquerque police and firefighters are trying to make sure no more children die in hot cars.

They announced a new campaign Friday called "Look Before you Lock."

It comes just weeks after Sandra Rodriguez Miramontes, 19, left her 2-year old nephew in her hot car for eight hours outside the day care where she worked.

Albuquerque's police and fire chiefs, Ray Schultz and James Breen, reminded adults to check rear and passenger seats, and never leave keys within a child's reach.

They'll be passing out posters to put up in local businesses to remind parents to check their cars.

The Miramontes family was there also asking people to listen to them so they never have to suffer like they've had to.

"If maybe one person who's watching this, to watch it tell other people, ask them to do the same so it spreads out more," one family member said.

Sandra Rodriguez Miramontes is still in jail because she's in the country illegally and is on an immigration hold.
