Police chase leads to school lockdown

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An attempt to arrest a violent fugitive sparked a police chase in southeast Albuquerque neighborhood Thursday afternoon that ended with the help of a police dog.

Along the way Bandelier Elementary School was locked down for an hour as police swarmed a neighborhood near Garfield Avenue and Carlisle Boulevard SE.  The school is about a block away.

U. S. marshals with a warrant for Rudolfo "Rudy" Rodriguez found their suspect in a vehicle near San Mateo and Ross SE and called in Albuquerque police to help with the arrest.

But Rodriguez took off with with Metro 1, the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department helicopter, helping to track his route.

Police said Rodriguez abandoned the car leaving his girlfriend behind and fled into the neighborhood in the 500 block of Carlisle.

Officers set up a perimeter, called in a K-9 unit and began searching the area.

A "canine apprehension" to Rodriguez into custody and left him with what police said was not a serious injury.

A witness told KRQE News 13 Rodriguez could be seen bleeding from a wound to his back.

The lockdown at Bandelier began at about 2 p.m. and ended at 3 p.m.

Rodriguez was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on the previous warrant for aggravated assault on a deadly weapon.
