Police find meth lab near ABQ school

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A medical call about an overdose early Thursday morning led Albuquerque police to a meth lab.

When officers arrived concerns grew after finding the lab is just down the street from Highland High School.

Hazmat teams were called in and started pulling out what looked like pieces of a chemistry lab.

Officers say the meth was not being cooked at the time, but there was evidence it had been earlier.

The type of meth lab and it being so close to the high school is a concern.

“That red fosters gas is an active lab, that goes up in the air, if the wind is blowing in the right direction the school is less than a block away that could be very hazardous to the kids health, especially there right next to the field,” Sgt. Patrick Ficke said.

Students were jogging around that field Thursday morning possibly during a physical education class.

Police say the people who called 911 and reported their friend's overdose ran before officers arrived.

No word on their friend's condition.

If he recovers detectives say they will seek charges for the illegal operation.

Police say the suspect’s father worked for Sandia National Laboratory.

They are now investigating if the glassware used in the meth operation came from the labs.
