FARMINGTON, N.M. (KRQE) - The San Juan County Sheriff's Office is investigating a late night crash that injured two men when a truck to plunged 200 feet into a canyon.
It happened around 10 p.m. Thursday above the San Juan River downstream from Navajo Dam.
The driver, Timothy Maes, 22, told deputies he looked down for a moment and sailed off the cliff.
Witnesses reported hearing the truck accelerate followed by the sound of it hitting rocks and trees. The crumpled truck stopped short of the river.
Fishermen in a canoe came to the aid of the Maes and his passenger, Jared Jacquez, 35
Maes suffered minor injuries, but Jacquez was ejected from the vehicle and pinned under the tires. He was taken by medical helicopter to San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington for treatment of multiple injuries.
Deputies continue to investigate the crash, and not charges have been filed or citations issued.
