LEA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) - A sheriff's deputy serving a search warrant in a murder case was shot in the arm.
Investigators said the Lea County SWAT team and Hobbs Police went to a trailer home Thursday on a high risk murder warrant.
Someone opened fire shooting 18 rounds at officers and hitting Sergeant Michael Tovar in the right arm and neck area. Tovar, a 6 year veteran of the Lea County Sheriff's Office was airlifted to Lubbock for his injuries, and later released.
The cops fired back, but no one inside the home was hit. James Gomez and Juan Videl were later arrested for the shooting, and charged with aggravated battery, and aggravated assault on a peace officer.
State police have taken over the investigation. During a search of the residence, New Mexico State Police found 11 firearms and one improvised explosive device (IED) inside the residence.
There is no word on what murder case detectives were trying to get information about.
