No prison time for cop impersonator

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A man accused of posing as a cop and trying to solicit sex from a 10-year-old girl will not go to prison for the crime.

On Tuesday a Bernalillo County District Court judge sentenced Peter Ortiz to five years supervised probation and ordered him to register as a sex offender for 10 years.

This was in part of a plea deal Ortiz accepted on Monday.

Last year officials say Ortiz called several women from a restricted number pretending he was an Albuquerque police detective. He allegedly then asked the women to re-enact adult acts over the phone.

Prosecutors say the victims in the case did not want to testify so they believed a plea deal was in the best interest of everyone involved.

In 2008 Ortiz was arrested at a local fast food restaurant where he had arranged to pay for sex with who he thought was a 10-year-old girl but turned out to be a cop.

If Ortiz violated his probation he will go to jail for nearly 18 years.
