ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A murder suspect came close to slipping out of the Metropolitan Detention Center last week.

Deputies say Joel Spies, 30, almost tricked jail officials into letting him out of MDC on Tuesday.

He gave them another inmate's name and then told them it was his "big day' because he was going into the Community Custody Program.

It almost worked.

Guards put Spies in the release pod, but 15 minutes later another guard realized he was missing.

They found him soon after.

So needless to say nobody was taking any chances when Spies appeared in court Friday.

A guard was ordered to stand next to him during his arraignment.

Spies has been in jail since April accused of killing his neighbor.

Police say he got into a fight with Donald Gregg two years ago while they were drinking. Gregg fell and hit his head

Instead of helping the unconscious man, Spies dragged him into his apartment, according to police.

Gregg died eight months later.

Spies is charged with murder and, now, escape.
