ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The man accused of causing a scare at Coronado Mall over the weekend claims he was dressed in what looked like combat gear because he's training for tryouts for the Albuquerque Fire Department.

On Saturday afternoon, police were called about a man in the parking lot with a shot gun and wearing body armor.

Police identified that man as 20-year-old Heath Holden.

According to the criminal complaint, the vest turned out to be a weight vest used for working out.

Holden told police he was training for tryouts for the Albuquerque Fire Department.

But things escalated when Holden told police he had hand grenades and a bomb in his car.

Turns out those items were toys and a firework.

Police say Holden also had a 9-inch long knife in his pocket.

He's charged with a misdemeanor for unlawful possession, transfer or sale of weapons.

Police say he's not facing more serious charges because he did not make direct threats about blowing anything up.

Holden is banned from Coronado Center.
