ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A man claiming to have a bomb locked down a strip mall and shut down a major commuter route Thursday before surrendering to Albuquerque police.

Details about the man and the purported explosive are not yet available.

Central was closed from the Rio Grande to 46th Street creating a westbound backup that extended to Old Town and Lomas Boulevard.  The street reopened about 6:15 p.m.

The incident began just before 3 p.m. when the man, described only as a Native American, walked into Pro's Ranch Market at Central Avenue NW and Atrisco Drive carrying a package he said was a bomb.

The entire strip mall on the northwest corner of the intersection was locked down as the man reportedly sat on a bench out front.

Just before 6 p.m. police reported the man had complied with officers' commands and surrendered.

KRQE News 13 will have more information on what happened on later newscasts.
