LOVINGTON, N.M. (AP) - State police are investigating the apparent suicide of Lea County Sheriff Rod Coffman.

State police spokesman Robert McDonald says the sheriff was found dead in his home Sunday night from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

McDonald says the Hobbs Police Department and New Mexico State Police responded to a 911 call at Coffman's home in Hobbs about 11:30 p.m. and found the sheriff dead in his bedroom.

Officials say it is unclear why Coffman may have committed suicide.
