ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) - A middle school student in Roswell was arrested for a gift he gave his friend.
School resource officers at Sierra Middle School say the 12-year-old gave a bag of marijuana to a fellow student.
When they learned what happened they searched the boy's locker and found a kitchen knife.
The student told them it was for protection.
"Whether it was just what he said or he really was needing it, he didn't have it on his person where he was carrying it around like he was actually going to hurt someone," police Sgt. Jim Preston said.
The boy is charged with possession of a deadly weapon on school premises.
The female student was cited for marijuana possession.
