SANTA FE (KRQE) - A Santa Fe man who claimed self-defense in the stabbing death of a pre-school teacher is free to go.
After a trial lasting four days a jury found Adrian Gonzales not guilty of first- and second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of Victoriano "Mo" Moises Byrne-Gonzales during a 2011 fight in Pojoaque .
Gonzales, 31, was also acquitted on charges of stabbing another man in that same fight.
The Associated Press reports Gonzales smiled slightly as the verdict was read while family members of Byrne-Gonzales cried.
Santa Fe County sheriff's deputies say the two victims were trying to help a woman who was in a fight with Gonzales and that the woman was Gonzales' then-girlfriend.
Investigators say Gonzales responded by stabbing both men.
He claimed self-defense in court.
Gonzales could be re-tried on two lesser charges in the future.
