ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A former police chief, who violated state law by selling old evidence guns without proper approval, has a new job.

Santa Fe police have hired Patrick Gallagher to be captain in charge of the internal affairs unit, the unit that investigates wrong doing by officers.

A KRQE News 13 special assignment report last year showed that in 2010 Gallagher ordered almost ninety old guns in the T or C evidence room auctioned off to raise money for the department.

Selling no-longer-needed weapons is legal, but only under certain guidelines.

Gallagher admitted he did not follow the guidelines including one that requires permission from a judge.

Gallagher left the T or C police shortly after out report aired.

Santa Fe's police chief says what Gallagher did was not criminal or intentional
