ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) - A former city commissioner in Alamogordo has been charged with turning in falsified voter registration cards.
Chris Lujan was charged Thursday with four felony counts for allegedly altering the date voters signed the cards.
Lujan served as a commissioner from 2006 through 2010, and was running again in this month's city commission election. He filed paperwork with the state to allow him to sign up voters.
The deadline to register for the city election was Feb. 7, and Lujan acknowledged to the Alamogordo Daily News (http://bit.ly/ywIcR2 ) that he changed signature dates on four cards to meet the deadline. But he said he did so on instructions from the Otero County Clerk's office. The county clerk denies that, and said she asked the District Attorney to investigate.
Lujan lost the election.
