LAS CRUCES (AP) - A Las Cruces man has died after choking on a bag of cocaine he tried to swallow while being booked on drug trafficking charges.
Doña Ana County spokeswoman Kelly Jameson says 57-year-old Hermilio Salcedo died Sunday at a local hospital.
Officers at the county detention center had found a bag of suspected cocaine in Salcedo's body cavity after he was arrested a week ago.
Jameson tells the Las Cruces Sun-News that Salcedo removed it, then tried to swallow it but choked.
The jail's medical staff performed CPR before Salcedo was transported to the hospital.
Jameson says he remained in intensive care until he died Sunday.
