Court affirms '09 Tatum killing

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The state Supreme Court has upheld the murder conviction of a Tatum man for a 2009 killing in southeastern New Mexico.

Jesse Freeman was sentenced to life in prison for shooting 50-year-old Robert Fleetwood twice in the head in the victim's home near Tatum. The two men had argued over money the day before the killing.

The court ruled on Monday that there was ample evidence to support Freeman's first-degree murder conviction and that he was not entitled to a jury instruction about self-defense as a justification for the killing.

The court also affirmed Freeman's conviction of tampering with evidence for burying a pistol used in the murder.

Tatum has a population of nearly 800 and is about 40 miles north of Hobbs in Lea County.
