LAS CRUCES (KRQE) - A Las Cruces woman and her live-in boyfriend have been arrested for locking their soon to be adopted daughter in a cage.

Cindy Patriarchias and Edmond Gonzales are both charged with child abuse.

Police say they got a call that the 8-year-old was being left home alone.

When officers got there they searched the home and found the 8-year-old inside a wooden cage that measured about two feet by five feet.

The mother told them she left the girl in there while she took her other three kids to watch a movie.

Police say Patriarchias was in the process of adopting the 8-year-old who suffers from microcephaly, a condition that leaves a person's head much smaller than normal.
It also results in developmental problems.
