ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A notorious New Mexico killer has died 50 years before his prison sentence ended.
Carlos Herrera, 31, was just 20-years-old when he murdered 17-year-old Ricky Martinez and 17-year-old Karen Castanon as they walked to El Santuario de Chimayo on Good Friday, 2000.
Herrera shot Ricky first then kidnapped Karen took her to a remote area and shot her too.
He was sentenced to two life sentences and would not have been eligible for parole until his turned 60-years-old.
Prison officials say Herrera died last week at UNM Hospital from what they call natural causes.
While officials can not say if he had a serious illness, they could confirm he has been transported to UNM Hospital many times over the last couple years.
